The Messenger

Lately, looking back, I'm thinking about it.

Even though, it was forty-some years ago.

Back then, I could explain my reasons to doubt it,

But today, I really don't know.

I was one of the first that started to follow.

I was part of the throng that we soon became.

I'm not one of the trusted twelve that you all know,

Even though . . . they knew me by name.

Hey JC, are we anything you thought we'd be?

Seems such loss, to hang on a cross,

Giving up your life for me.

Hey JC, I hope that you remember me.

From our Superstar days and Mysterious Ways,

Always good company.

I was falling asleep on the edge of the garden,

Stirred to fear at the sound when the soldiers came.

You went to the garden to pray, and we watched them take you away

To your trial, degradation and pain

Lately, more and more, I'm feeling a calling,

To tell of the stone and the things unknown of that time.

Now I'm hearing a rumor that you'll be returning

To this world ... Half out of its mind.

Hey JC, is this really what you want from me?

Travel the world, spreading the word

Of something so hard to believe?

Hey JC, I hope that you remember me.

From our Superstar days and Mysterious Ways,

Always good company.

In each life will come a time...

We must clearly define

The things we truly believe

And the people that we want to be.

Hey JC, I'll do anything you ask of me

Spend the rest of my day, living my faith

Something no one else can see

Hey JC, I hope that you remember me.

From our Superstar days and Mysterious Ways,

You're always good company.

The name of the rock band in "Jesus Christ, Superstar" was "Mysterious Ways."

The chorus vocals are Cliff Stegall and Cristi Campbell Ferguson.  Cristi also does that high soprano in the last verse that just gives me chills!
