Long Day

It’s been a long day, it’s good to be home

Glad you can stay, I don’t need to be alone

Those shiny new strings look good on you,

Sounding so pure, ringing so true,

Each note seems to say, it’s been a long day ...

We've come a long way, my friend

Glad you could stay, just the two of us again

Songs we can play, remembering when

The two of us were three, her, you and me

Each chord seems to say, we've come a long way

And you miss her, too.

You miss how she'd smile when we’d play a song

You miss how she tried singing along

And miss how she laughed when she'd get it wrong

As if we would mind ...

It's been a long day, time to turn in

Glad you can stay, tonight I need a friend

Thank you again, for taking the time

Unless or until she changes her mind,

Each note seems to say, it’s been a long day

And you miss her too.

Each note seems to say, it’s been a long day

And you miss her too.

I always wanted to write a song to or for my guitars - my best friends.  This one started with the "shiny new strings look good on you" line, and the rest just fell into place.

I wanted to write a jazz ballad, like "One for My Baby "  in a style similar to great songwriters like Johnny Mercer or Cole Porter. Whether I've succeeded, I'll leave to the listener.

We decided to add this song to the album at the last minute. I wanted a simple guitar/vocal solo song to finish with.  Maybe we'll  do an ensemble recording in the future.
